Deep-sea fishing on a charter is an exceptional way to spend time with friends. It is important to be properly prepared for the excursion so nobody rocks the boat and there's smooth sailing. Here are several things you need to know before going on a deep-sea fishing charter.

Prepare for Motion Sickness

Some people are simply prone to motion sickness. If you know you are someone who easily gets horrible motion sickness, it would be in your best interest to ask your primary care physician for a prescription medication. Over-the-counter medication is also an option for people who would rather avoid the unpleasantness of motion sickness. Whichever one you use, be sure it won't interfere with medication you already take or any health conditions you may have.

Be Prepared for Physical Exertion

While the possibility of motion sickness is a well-known given on a deep-sea fishing charter, many people don't realize that reeling in a large fish can take a lot of physical exertion. Therefore, you'll want to avoid working out a day or two before your deep sea fishing trip so you can save your muscle strength to reel in the large fish you hook on your line. Also, if you have or have had a shoulder injury or problems with your elbows, wrists, arms, or back, be sure to tell your fishing guide as you will likely need assistance in reeling in your catch.

Don't Bring Any Bananas Onto the Boat

Unless you've been on a boat charter before, you may not be aware of an old superstition that goes back to the 1700s — the belief that bananas are bad luck on boats. Boat captains and fishing guides usually inform their guests that bananas are not permitted on their boats due to the pervasive superstition. Therefore, do not take any bananas with you.

Wear the Proper Footwear

Your feet will get wet. The shoes you wear should have a rubber sole so they grip easily. Don't wear sandals, open-toed shoes, or flip-flops. Don't wear shoes that you wouldn't want to risk ruining. Ideally, the material should be easy to clean and not a non-machine-washable fabric, such as leather. Ideally, a pair of water shoes or rain boots would be great to wear while deep-sea fishing.
