Carrying a concealed weapon or firearm comes with a lot of responsibility, so taking a CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) class is an excellent place to start. The training program will educate you in many aspects of concealed carry, and in most states, is required before you can apply for a carry permit.

Finding Approved CCW Classes

When you are ready to start training for concealed carry, you need to find approved CCW classes in your area. In some states, you can take the classes online and get a certificate after taking the final test, but other states require shooting range time before you complete the training, so you have to attend the class in person.

You can often find listings for CCW classes online, or you can check with the local gun shops to see if they know of any CCW classes coming up. The local police department may also have a list of CCW training programs and instructors you can contact to ask about upcoming classes.

It is a good idea to check with the state you live in to ensure that the class you are considering is approved as a training class for your concealed carry license before you start the CCW class.

Class Content

When you sign up for CCW training, you will learn about the laws surrounding concealed carry and your responsibilities as a gun owner. The class time may include some scenarios that will help you understand when you should use your gun and whether it is legal or not.

The training is designed to prepare you so you know when it is okay to draw your gun, when it is legal to fire it, and what will happen if you are involved in a shooting. Often the instructor is a retired police officer or someone with a strong background in firearms and is educated in the legal use of them.

The CCW training may include safe handling of firearms, and you may be required to spend a specific amount of time on the range practicing. Rarely do you need to qualify or shoot a specific score on the gun range for the state, but your instructor may encourage you to practice drawing your firearm and firing at the target to build proficiency.

Scoring the hits on the target is the best way to see improvements as you practice, so setting a minimum score or qualifier can be helpful, even if it is not required. Once you have finished the CCW training program, you will receive a certificate of completion that you can present to the state along with your application for a license to carry concealed.
