Going to Hawaii without entertaining the thought of learning to surf is like going to going to New York City without considering the prospect of seeing Times Square. The Hawaiian culture is surf culture. With most travelers sticking to the Big Island of Oahu for the majority of their Hawaiian vacation, it's become the easiest place in Hawaii to find surf lessons taught by reputable instructors. Typically, most surfing lessons in Hawaii are offered in three types of packages: private, semi-private, and group. PRIVATE LESSONS A private lesson is the most expensive of the three surf lesson options, but it can be the most beneficial to first time surfers or poor swimmers. In a private lesson, guests are given a one-on-one learning experience, so that each skill is mastered before moving on to the next. SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS A semi-private lesson is cheaper than a private lesson, but clients share their time with the instructor with three to four other clients. Many customers prefer this setting as it delivers some one-on-one time, but also allows them to develop camaraderie with other first-time surfers. GROUP LESSONS A group lesson is the cheapest option of the various types of surfing lessons in Hawaii, but includes virtually no one-on-one time with the surf instructor. Group lessons are a good option for those traveling in groups, though, or for those with some surf experience. Choosing the right learning environment can be crucial to catching that first wave while taking Hawaii surfing lessons. Share
