I live in an apartment complex where women predominately reside. A few months ago, one of my neighbors was attacked in the parking lot when she came home late from work. The woman was not seriously injured, and the perpetrator was apprehended, but many of us living in the apartment complex felt fearful and vulnerable. I decided to take action by inviting my female neighbors to participate in a Darien, CT women's self defense class. The class normally cost seventy-five dollars for an eight week course, but the teacher was kind enough to lower the fee to fifty dollars due to the recent incident near our home. We attended classes twice a week, and each session lasted an hour. During this time, we practiced basic self-defense skills, and we also learned the correct way to use pepper spray. The teacher of our Darien, CT women's self defense class was male, and he gave us opportunities to practice moves on him so we could get a feel for what it would be like to defend oneself against a male perpetrator. The class was not easy in the beginning, but we were all inspired to get into better shape as well. The class really helped us to feel more confident and safe. Share
