In Texas, we are often known for some of our quirks. I have lived in Texas most of my life and I am comfortable saying that many of the activities and sayings that are associated with Texas are either not true or greatly exaggerated. However, one thing that we are known for and that we are experts in, is bar-b-q. There is no doubt that hunting for the animal, cooking it on a spit or a bar-b-q it makes for some amazing, affordable meals. We can obtain the food at the grocery store as well, but it's fresher and less expensive to hunt it ourselves. A hog hunt in South Texas is an excellent example of the lengths we will go to, to obtain fresh meat. It is important to understand that hunting for hogs is not a cruel activity. They are feral and wild throughout much of South Texas and are seen as a nuisance animal. Hunting them prevents their numbers from growing too high and limits the damage they can do to property. A hog hunt in South Texas typically requires finding an area where they are often at. Water, marshy land and food sources are common places for them to linger. The safest way to hunt them is to build a stand at least 25 feet above the ground and hide there till you see one. Shoot it and you have meat. In addition, dogs can also be trained as assistants for hog hunting.
